What to Expect from a Credit Card Debt Consolidation Loan
![]() |
Debt is a problem that can easily get out of control. Credit cards are so easily accessible these days, it's not surprising that debt is so prevalent. Many people are in tens of thousands of dollars worth of debt and carry multiple credit cards. Some of those cards are maxed out, or at their maximum spending limit. Sound familiar? If so, then you may want to consider a credit card debt consolidation loan.
There are multiple benefits to this type of loan. One, of course, is that all your outstanding debts get paid off. This affects your credit rating in a favorable way, and you don't have to deal with numerous monthly payments or creditor calls anymore. You'll still have the same amount of debt, only in a different form. Also, most people find that the monthly payment for their consolidation loan is less than the total amount of money they were paying to their creditors each month because the term is extended. And, if people can get a lower interest rate on their loan than the rate that exists on their credit cards, they gain even more savings.
Banks and credit unions are good places to begin when seeking a debt consolidation loan. If you've got good credit, you can often get consolidation loans with low rates from your financial institution. But if your credit isn't so favorable, other strategies may be needed. Some homeowners looking for a debt consolidation loan use the equity in their homes to secure the money they need at rates they can afford. Other people use a friend or family member with good credit as a cosigner on the loan, or put up collateral like the title to a vehicle to secure the loan.
There is an alternative to a credit card debt consolidation loan, and it is to deal with a credit counseling company. These companies offer something similar to consolidation, except without a loan. Rather than paying all your creditors each month, you pay the credit counseling company. They in turn pay all your creditors, and will work to get you lower rates and reductions so you can save money on the cost of your debt. Most of these consolidation and credit counseling companies charge a monthly fee for their services, except for Consumer Credit Counseling which is a non-profit service.
